The NYSE Composite Index is a New York Stock Exchange based index that tracks price changes of all common stocks listed on the NYSE. A market-cap weighted index, the NYSE Composite Index also encompasses four subcategories, which include financial, industrial, utility, and transportation indexes. The price changes of the NYSE Composite Index are measured in points, which are later translated into dollars and cents. As such, the NYSE Composite Index figures provide a comprehensive picture of average stock market price movements. The NYSE Composite Index is quite dynamic and calls for incessant calculation and updating of acquired data. After the NYSE Composite Index statistics are gathered and processed, they are released both in print and on the electronic ticker scroll.
