The term regional fund indicates that an investment vehicle is focused on opportunities for investment within a specific region. The region of interest for a regional fund can be defined economically (e.g., emerging markets), geographically (e.g., Eastern Europe), or politically (e.g., Korea). Several types of fund can be described as a regional fund. For example, the regional fund could be a regional private equity fund, a regional real estate fund, or a regional mutual fund. The rationale of an investment manager for a forming a regional fund may be to leverage specific regional expertise and connections. The regional fund may also be designed to take advantage of unique investment opportunities based upon political and economic trends in a region. Similarly, the investor may prefer a regional fund because of the access the regional fund has to better investment opportunities than can be found locally, or because of a belief that the region is going to outperform other areas economically.
