The procedure introduced in the Criminal Procedure And Investigations Act (1996) by which the accused would be asked whether he intended to plead guilty or not guilty before determining whether the case would be dealt with summarily (by the Magistrates’ Court or on indictment to the Crown Court).
A preliminary hearing in the magistrates’ court where a defendant indicates his plea in response to the charges against him. This will be relevant in deciding the mode of trial.
