Normal retirement age is the age at which a person can first retire and receive full benefits without facing early retirement penalties. The Social Security Administration considers normal retirement age to be between 65 and 67, depending on a person’s birth year. Retirement plans for employees with highly physically or mentally demanding job responsibilities may have a younger normal retirement age. If a person retires at normal retirement age he will be eligible to receive full retirement benefits. Under many plans (including the social security plan) those who retire before normal retirement age will get smaller benefits, ceteris paribus, than those who retire at normal retirement age. Under the social security plan, those who delay their retirement until after the normal retirement age will get increased benefits.
