KOSPI is the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (or Indexes). As such, KOSPI refers to a variety of indicators that are used to measure the performance of stocks on the Korea Stock Exchange (KSE). The KOSPI itself is best known and refers to a weighted (by capitalization) index of about 700 Korean equities. From its base year of 1980 (when the KOSPI equalled 100), the KOSPI had risen to about 1350 near the end of 2005. The KOSPI 200 is also widely quoted and includes 200 of the largest and most liquid issues traded on the KSE; the base year for the KOSPI 200 is 1990. KOSPI 100 and KOSPI 50 indexes are published as well; there is a KOSPI IT for information technology and communication stocks. There are also KOSPI subindexes based on industry groups and market capitalization.
