A financial planner is a professional who analyses individual financial and economic circumstances and devises a plan to accomplish financial goals and objectives. Those working in the capacity of a financial planner may have diverse backgrounds and training. Thus, depending on their experience, accountants, securities brokers, bankers, and attorneys may be included in the financial planner category. Financial planner title may even be held by insurance agents and real estate brokers. Regardless of formal training, a financial planner must be proficient in areas of estate planning, taxes, and retirement planning. Other financial planner expertise should include budgeting, debt management, and investment. In the United States, a financial planner reference list can be obtained from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. Additionally, The International Association of Financial Planning (IAFP) maintains a record of financial planners who have passed a financial planner Practical Knowledge Test.
