A combination of the words “Britain” and “exit” which refers to Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union. The referendum resulted in an overall vote to leave the EU, by 51.9% to 48.1%. According to the Wall Street Journal, “Britain’s vote to leave the European Union battered the British pound by more than 11% Thursday night and into Friday morning, pushed down stocks in Asia and pointed to a day of steep falls across the world’s financial markets.” The vote was split between the constituent countries of the United Kingdom, with England and Wales voting to leave, and Scotland and Northern Ireland voting to remain.
