Accredited Personal Financial Planning Specialist is a professional title available to Certified Public Accountants. A certified public accountant can become an accredited personal financial planning specialist by completing a set of personal financial planning (PFP) courses, meeting PFP experience requirements, passing a qualifying exam from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant’s (AICPA), and being a member in good standing of the AICPA. An accredited personal financial planning specialist has the certified public accountant-personal financial specialist designation (i.e. CPA-PFS). Accountants who want to concentrate on individual and family financial planning will probably benefit most from becoming an Accredited Personal Financial Planning Specialist. An Accredited Personal Financial Planning Specialist helps clients organize their finances and make investment decisions. Specifically, an Accredited Personal Financial Planning Specialist evaluates a client’s financial history, identifies shortfalls in their financial plan, and prepares and implements a revised plan. An Accredited Personal Financial Planning Specialist may then periodically review the plan to make sure it’s achieving the desired result. However, an Accredited Personal Financial Planning Specialist will not handle the actual purchasing and/or trading of securities and other investment assets.
