Non Governmental Organization

Full Definition of Non Governmental Organization

A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is a private sector, non-profit, voluntary organization that works on a local, national or even international level. An NGO participates or contributes to education, training, cooperation projects, progressive and other humanitarian activities. Most perform their activities around particular issues like health, human rights and environment. NGOs offer expertise, analysis and assists in monitoring and implementing international agreements. A few NGOs are accredited to the United Nations.

A List of notable non-governmental organizations includes Organization of Standardization (ISO), World Wide Web (W3), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Functions

Non-governmental organizations vary in their functioning. A few conduct programs while others lobby for a specific cause. A number of international NGOs have consultative status with relevant United Nations agencies. For example, NGO Third World Network has consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and also with the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). A number of NGOs are funded by the government. Some raise funds by a variety of methods like the sale of services and subscriptions.

Almost all non-governmental organizations use management techniques to ensure success in their activities. Many welcome voluntary contributions and public support. They are often found to work in areas where government support to target community is not possible-specially in developing nations. Most NGOs are now regarded as an integral part of international relations.

Careers

Volunteers do not exclusively makeup the NGO workforce. Many NGO employees work as part of their normal career and they bring and build experience, contact and skills. Many non-governmental organizations send expatriates to work in ‘third world’ countries. This has led to debate whether they should be sent at all. Local employees are more in touch with grassroots issues than personnel brought in from foreign countries.

Non-governmental organizations form an important group of employers around the globe. In some African countries, they make up list of most reliable employers. For example, NGO CONCERN worldwide employs more than 5,000 local staff and more than 150 foreigners in Congo.
