Pokemon (short for the Japanese “Pocket Monsters”) is a media franchise that started in 1995. The franchise was created by Satoshi Tajiri and began with two video games for the original Game Boy. After the initial game was published by Nintendo, the franchise expanded to animated TV shows and movies, comics, trading cards, and toys. In July 2016, the franchise released Pokémon Go, an augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic. The game immediately became wildly popular, receiving more downloads than some of the most used social network and dating apps. As an investor in Niantic and The Pokémon Company (which owns the Pokémon franchise), Nintendo reaped the benefits of Pokémon Go’s successful launch. Following the release of the mobile game, Nintendo’s stock soared in its biggest one-day jump since the 1980s.
