Tortious interference, also known as tortious interference with contractual relations or business relations, is a legal claim that arises when a third party intentionally interferes with the contractual or business relationships of another party, resulting in economic harm. To prove tortious interference, the plaintiff typically needs to demonstrate several elements, including the existence of a valid contractual or business relationship, the defendant’s knowledge of the relationship, intentional interference by the defendant with the relationship, and resulting damages suffered by the plaintiff. Interference can take various forms, such as inducing a party to breach a contract, disrupting business negotiations, or spreading false information about a business. Tortious interference claims aim to compensate the injured party for the financial losses incurred due to the defendant’s wrongful actions and to deter similar conduct in the future.
