Define: Temporary Restraining Order

A Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) is a legal injunction issued by a court to prohibit a party from engaging in certain actions or behaviors for a limited period, typically until a hearing can be held to determine whether a longer-term injunction, such as a preliminary injunction, is warranted. TROs are often sought in cases involving imminent harm, such as domestic violence, harassment, or threats to property or financial interests. They are intended to provide immediate relief and protection to the party requesting the order. TROs are temporary in nature and can be issued without prior notice to the opposing party in urgent situations. However, they generally require a showing of irreparable harm and a likelihood of success on the merits of the case. Violating a TRO can result in serious legal consequences, including contempt of court charges.
