Putative
Quick Summary of Putative

Putative refers to something that is commonly accepted or believed to be true, valid, or legitimate, even though it may not necessarily be so in reality. It often implies a perception or assumption of validity or authenticity based on common understanding or prevailing beliefs, rather than objective verification. For example, a putative marriage is one that is believed to be valid or legally recognised, even if it later turns out to be invalid due to legal requirements not being met. Similarly, a putative heir is someone who is assumed or believed to be entitled to inherit property, although their claim may be disputed or disproven. The term “putative” is often used in legal contexts to describe beliefs, claims, or relationships that are widely accepted or assumed, but may not be officially confirmed or legally recognised.
