Full Definition of Portfolio Manager

A portfolio manager is the asset management professional who makes investment decisions for a portfolio.

For example, in a mutual fund, the portfolio manager would be the person with the ultimate responsibility to decide what to buy, hold, and sell to achieve the objectives of the fund. Many mutual fund investors focus directly on the track record of the portfolio manager rather than the fund itself. They will avoid or sell out of a fund that has changed to a new, unproven portfolio manager. A pension fund, hedge fund, or REIT, among others, generally all have a portfolio manager. If the portfolio is large, multiple individuals may share the portfolio manager role, perhaps each managing one portion of the portfolio. An important credential for the portfolio manager, especially with a mutual fund, is the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
