A peer typically refers to someone who is considered equal in some respect, often in terms of social status, age, or abilities. In law, a peer can also refer to a member of a group, such as a jury, who shares similar characteristics or experiences with the individuals involved in a case. Peer review is a process commonly used in academia and scientific research, where experts evaluate the work of their colleagues to ensure its quality and accuracy.
n. an equal. A “jury of one’s peers,” to which criminal defendants are constitutionally entitled, means an impartial group of citizens from the judicial district (e.g. county) in which the defendant lives.
It does not mean a jury ethnically, educationally, economically or sexually the same as the defendant, although in some jurisdictions attempts are made to meet those criteria.
