Define: Marriage Licence

A document that authorises a couple to get married, usually available from the county clerk’s office in the state where the marriage will take place. Couples pay a small fee for a marriage licence, and must often wait a few days before it is issued. In addition, a few states require a short waiting period–usually not more than a day–between the time the licence is issued and the time the marriage may take place. And some states still require blood tests for couples before they will issue a marriage licence, though most no longer do.

A marriage license is a legal document issued by a government authority that grants permission for a couple to marry. It typically involves completing an application, providing necessary documentation (such as proof of identity and age), and paying a fee. The issuance of a marriage licence signifies that the couple meets the legal requirements to marry, such as being of legal age, not already married to someone else, and meeting any other specific criteria set by the jurisdiction. After obtaining a marriage license, the couple can proceed with their marriage ceremony within the specified timeframe allowed by the license.
