A Magistrates Court is a lower court that typically handles minor criminal offences, civil cases involving small claims, and preliminary hearings for more serious criminal cases. It operates within the jurisdiction of a specific geographical area and is presided over by magistrates or justices of the peace, who are usually laypersons without legal qualifications. Magistrates Courts play an essential role in the judicial system by providing accessible and efficient resolution of legal disputes for individuals and small businesses. They also serve as a gateway to the higher courts for more serious matters that require further adjudication. In some jurisdictions, Magistrates Courts may also have jurisdiction over certain family law matters, traffic offences, and other specialised areas of law.
Magistrates’ courts deal with most minor criminal offences, and issue committal proceedings to the Crown Court for more serious cases (see: Court system of England). They also handle some family-related cases.
