Define: Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, which is part of the body’s immune system. It occurs when abnormal lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, multiply uncontrollably, forming tumours in lymph nodes or other lymphatic tissues. There are two main types of lymphoma: Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, each with different subtypes and characteristics. Symptoms of lymphoma may include swollen lymph nodes, fever, night sweats, weight loss, fatigue, and itching. The exact cause of lymphoma is often unknown, but factors such as genetics, immune system deficiencies, infections, and exposure to certain chemicals or radiation may increase the risk. Treatment for lymphoma depends on the type, stage, and aggressiveness of the disease, but may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or stem cell transplantation. With advancements in medical treatment, many individuals with lymphoma can achieve remission or long-term survival, particularly if diagnosed and treated early. Regular medical check-ups and awareness of potential symptoms are essential for early detection and effective management of lymphoma.

Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph nodes which can be caused by certain carcinogenic substances. It is a type of immune system cancer and can include Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Claimants who have lymphoma will see malignant cancer cells multiply at an alarming rate. These cells form tumours which can crowd out healthy cells.

There have been various studies throughout the 1980s through 2000 which have tried to establish a relationship between asbestos’ exposure in the workplace to a higher incidence of lymphoma. Some studies in Sweden and in Los Angeles found an association with occupational asbestos exposure and lymphoma. Other studies have found a much weaker link. Generally, experts have decided that more research is needed to define the risks between asbestos and exposure and lymphoma. Recent research in 2007 which reviewed the commercial use of amosite asbestos at three factories found mortality rates from lung cancer as well as elevated mortality rates from mesothelioma were more common than lymphoma.
