Definition: Industry Leader

Industry Leader

Full Definition of Industry Leader

Industry leader may be defined in several ways. Most often it is the company in a sector or business line with the highest sales, highest market share, or highest profits. But it can also be a technology leader who sets the standard for new products or the player with the most visible public image. Individual executives like Warren Buffett are examples who may be known personally better than their companies.

In most sectors, businesses will support a handful of leaders who can offer a broad line addressing all market segments. Others may succeed as niche players offering products or services specially adapted to a limited range of customers.
