Fresh Pursuit
Fresh Pursuit
Quick Summary of Fresh Pursuit

Fresh pursuit refers to the immediate and continuous pursuit of a suspect or fleeing criminal by law enforcement officers who have probable cause to believe that the suspect has committed a crime. This pursuit typically occurs without unnecessary delay and may involve the pursuit across jurisdictional boundaries. The concept of fresh pursuit allows law enforcement officers to apprehend suspects who are fleeing from the scene of a crime or attempting to evade arrest. It is aimed at preventing the escape of suspects and preserving public safety. In some jurisdictions, laws provide specific guidelines and limitations on the authority of law enforcement officers engaged in fresh pursuit, including requirements for notifying local authorities and obtaining permission to continue pursuit in certain circumstances.

What is the dictionary definition of Fresh Pursuit?
Dictionary Definition of Fresh Pursuit
n. immediate chase of a suspected criminal by a law enforcement officer, in which situation the officer may arrest the suspect without a warrant. It can also refer to chasing a suspect or escaped felon into a neighboring jurisdiction in an emergency, as distinguished from entering another jurisdiction with time to alert law enforcement people in that area. Example: when a deputy sheriff from Montgomery County pursues a car driven by a suspected bank robber into Baltimore County (in which he normally has no power to enforce the law), the doctrine of fresh pursuit allows him/her to make the arrest. It is also called hot pursuit.
