Expunge refers to the legal process of erasing or removing records of an arrest, criminal charge, or conviction from official documents or databases. It essentially wipes clean the individual’s criminal record as if the event never occurred. Expungement is typically granted under specific circumstances, such as completion of a diversion program, eligibility criteria, or passage of a certain amount of time without further legal issues. The purpose of expungement is to provide individuals with a fresh start and to mitigate the negative consequences of past criminal involvement, such as barriers to employment, housing, or education.
- To erase or strike out.
- To eliminate completely; annihilate.
To intentionally destroy, obliterate or strike out records or information in files, computers and other depositories. For example, state law may allow the criminal records of a juvenile offender to be expunged when he reaches the age of majority, to allow him to begin his adult life with a clean record. Or, a company or government agency may routinely expunge out-of-date records to save storage space.
