“Ex officio” is a Latin term meaning “by virtue of one’s office.” In legal contexts, it refers to a person who holds a particular position or title and therefore has certain rights, duties, or powers automatically associated with that position. For example, an ex officio member of a committee is someone who serves on the committee by virtue of holding another position, such as being the chairperson of a related organisation. In some cases, ex officio powers or privileges are exercised or conferred without the need for additional authorisation or appointment.
