Define: Donee

In legal terms, a “donee” refers to an individual or entity that receives a gift or donation from another party, known as the donor. The donee typically does not provide anything of value in return for the gift, distinguishing it from a transaction involving consideration or payment. Donees can include individuals, organisations, charities, or other legal entities that are eligible to receive gifts under the law. Once a gift is transferred to the donee, it becomes their property, and they have the legal right to use, manage, or dispose of it as they see fit, subject to any applicable legal restrictions or conditions imposed by the donor. The relationship between a donor and a donee is governed by the principles of gift law, which vary depending on the jurisdiction and the specific circumstances of the gift.

Although ‘donee’ is a general term meaning ‘recipient’, in trust law it often has the additional, and somewhat confusing, meaning of a person who holds a power of appointment.
