Define: Disciplinary Layoff

Disciplinary layoff is a human resources practice whereby an employee is temporarily or permanently removed from their position as a disciplinary measure due to misconduct or performance issues. Unlike a traditional layoff, which may occur for reasons such as downsizing or restructuring, a disciplinary layoff is initiated as a consequence of the employee’s behavior or actions. Disciplinary layoff may involve temporary suspension without pay, reassignment to a different role or department, or termination of employment. This disciplinary action is typically taken after an investigation and due process, following company policies and employment laws. The goal of disciplinary layoff is to address misconduct, correct behaviour, and maintain workplace standards while providing the employee with an opportunity to improve their conduct or performance.

A suspension or temporary removal of a worker from a job as a penalty for violating work rules. The worker does not receive a salary during the period of the layoff.
