The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is the principal prosecuting authority in England and Wales, responsible for prosecuting criminal cases investigated by the police and other law enforcement agencies. Established in 1986, the CPS operates independently of the police and government, making decisions on whether to prosecute cases based on the evidence provided by investigators and the public interest. The CPS works closely with police forces, victim support services, and other criminal justice agencies to ensure that cases are prosecuted effectively and fairly. Its primary role is to uphold the rule of law, protect the public interest, and seek justice for victims of crime by bringing offenders to trial and securing convictions in court.
