Full Definition of Balloon Interest


A higher coupon rate on serial bonds that matures at specific intervals at a later date. The coupon rate is often inflated, thus the name balloon interest. Bonds that have this inflated rate can be a lucrative investment for investors that retain the bonds for lengthy periods of time.
