Absolute return strategies derive returns from active management with little or no underlying market exposure, seeking to achieve positive returns in both up and down markets and not usually comparing the returns to any other measure (although sometimes cash is used for this purpose). A wide range of asset classes can be managed in this way, including traditional equities and bonds as well as alternatives such as hedge funds or currency.
